New Kickstarter: Alea Luma

A new Kickstarter by HaGü’s Dice Designs just went live:

ALEA LUMA – dice that light up (only) in your dice tray!

These are the first RPG dice sets in standard size out there that are using LEDs with induction coil technology.

Embedded in these resin dice are LEDs with tiny capacitor coils. When these capacitors enter a magnetic field specifically created for this purpose, they produce an electronic current that powers the LEDs inside the dice.

In essence, this means that the dice look more or less like regular dice when you handle them, but when you roll them into a special dice tray with a magnetic induction coil, they light up.

The oscillating magnetic field required to activate the LEDs is created by a larger (transmitter) induction coil that’s embedded in our special dice tray or your own dice tray, dice tower etc., which in turn is connected via USB-C port to a 5V power outlet of your choice. The dice tray doesn’t have a battery, so in order for the illumination to work, the tray has to be continuously connected to a USB power source.

The Kickstarter is a collaboration with Bescon and offers three base colours in Bescon’s Moonstone design – green, purple and red. The blue Icy Rocks design is a stretch goal.

Dice trays with built-in induction coils are also offered, as well as standalone induction coils in case you want to make these work in your own dice tray.
